6 days, to be exact. What did we get up to?
Well, we found a flat! We looked at 19 apartments, in 4 condominions (facilities including swimming pool, gym etc) in 3 different, but more or less central, areas. Who’d have thought it would be so tricky? We found, in no particular order: the right flat in the wrong location, a large apartment in great location/awful condition, a stunning view out of a horrid living room, a flat with a lovely landlord but too far from the centre (we’ve learned that this matters in KL traffic), and several spacious flats minutes walk from KLCC park in a condo boasting not one but two fabulous swimming pools and an amazing view of the Petronas Towers – oh and an equally amazing view of a massive, noisy, building site… I guess it’s lucky we don’t have anything (well not much, anyway) against certain parts of the colour spectrum because 80%+ of the flats were beige, or brown, or both… And the flat we found? Two bedrooms, nice building (view of the Towers if you take your armchair to the lift lobby). And the decor? Brown and beige. Of course.
What else did we do? We tried the public transport system, or at least the underground-which-is-also-overground bit. Fred bought a phone and SIM card so we have a Malaysian number, we discovered an amazing book shop as well, as just about every other sort of shop, all in a glitzy mall. We navigated some of the skywalks and covered pavements that protect pedestrians from rain and traffic. And we ate. And ate. My favourite was the South Indian thali, but I liked the pasta and the noodles and the satay too… Hence the need for the swimming pool and gym.
I felt as if we achieved lots, and I remembered the words of the song “I get by with a little help from my friends”. Well, I think without Bart and Kiran, whom we know from our Bombay days, and many other friends and friends of friends, we would have been completely clueless. So “terima kasih”, everyone!

Reading your blog today brought back so many memories of apartment hunting in Asia. We also found in Japan and in Singapore that brown and beige were the landlords colour of choice. The good thing is there are so many beautifully coloured textiles to buy in your part of the world that you will soon brighten up your living space.
I was worn out reading your blog. I thought I had been busy yesterday, singing in the morning at a workshop, singing in the afternoon – practice for the W.I. Centenary carol concert in Carlisle Cathedral early December and then a meeting in the evening but your busyness beat mine!!!!!! xx
