We spent a few days in Penang, and enjoyed ourselves immensely.
We drank ‘invigorating’ nutmeg tea*, (and nutmeg juice and nutmeg syrup) to ensure good health, beer for rehydration, gin and tonic to ward against malaria.
Penang is renowned throughout South East Asia for its food. As the manager of our hotel told us, if you don’t go home with a few extra kilos distributed about your person, your trip has failed…So honour (and greed) dictated some culinary adventures.
Menus weren’t always useful, so we resorted to the time-honoured ‘point and pray’ method of selection. Hokkien mee? delicious. Roti canai? Has become my favourite breakfast. Asam Laksa? It’s addictive. Meehoon soup with fish ball? Yum.
But, well, somehow when it came to this stall – no, we didn’t. Try it, that is. Although I’m sure (almost sure) it’s excellent…

*sold in the shop of the wonderful Tropical Spice Garden, under the category of ‘edible foods’. Now that’s a relief.
