Monkey Business

The setting of Banjaran resort, near Ipoh (a couple of hours drive from Kuala Lumpur) is stunning, in the rainforest and surrounded by karst hills.

Guests are woken by birdsong, and can idle away time watching butterflies. But… and there’s always a but, isn’t there… proximity to wildlife has its disadvantages.

It seems as though the Banjaran monkeys appreciate the cuisine as much as their human cousins. They tend to collect within snatching distance of the breakfast buffet, and they’ve worked out how to open the fridges in the rooms. The ingenious solution? Each room, as well as the restaurant, has its own guardian.

Cute? I think so.

And it works! We saw monkeys approaching the buffet, but beating a hasty retreat when the waiter grabbed and brandished the resident tiger.
